Old Town Pasadena
Along with the Sunset Strip, the nightlife in Old Town Pasadena is some of the busiest and most energetic in greater Los Angeles. The city has been building up the area to attract crowds for the last decade. One might say it has been aggressively built up - but Pasadena folks are anything but overtly aggressive. This is a town of casual elegance. The laid-back attitude of So. Cal. Beach life that finds its way thirty miles inland is mixed with an old history of Eastern Money, the Arts, and old fashioned Civic Pride. In fact, the Old Town area has not been lately built up but rather restored. As many LA cities began to do in the early 1990s (note Long Beach's Pine Avenue) Pasadena chose to take what had been available - but neglected - and turn it into a goldmine. Architecture is rich in this city. Old Town is full of wonderful 19th century structures. However, this end of town was showing signs of decay after the economic struggles of the 1970s. "Yuppie-ism" of the late 80s brought some interest back to the area. Gentrification set in (for better or for worse) and in moved new restaurants, clothing shops, bookstores, specialty shops and movie theaters. Ultimately the public has benefited from this new "Eastside" hangout. There aren't many spots in Los Angeles with such a collection of century-old buildings and fewer arranged for mass public enjoyment.
Nighttime and weekends are when the crowds come. There's a wide assortment of people - largely from outside Pasadena - who show up to enjoy a warm summer night or a warm winter night (this is Southern California). Speaking of which, the city is a perfect host every New Year's Day when the Rose Parade rolls through the city and through Old Town via the main strip Colorado Boulevard. Hundreds of millions of people see the beauty of the town on that day every year. Any envy is well earned in this little charming city.

Contrasting Newport Beach with fellow Orange Country neighbor Huntington Beach is like comparing the perceived East Coast refinement with West Coast sunny casualness. For the uninitiated it may seem as though the biggest activity in Newport were lounging about one's yacht while comparing tans. Kidding aside, this is a very wealthy town with...More
