Balboa Park
Plan on enjoying either a small portion of the park or spending a few days here. At over 1,300 acres this is a rather sizable lot. Enjoying Balboa park is similar to the story of the blind men and the elephant: it's different things to different people. To some it is a world famous zoo; to others it's a collection of several individual and distinctive museums; or it could be where you go to see world-class theater; perhaps it's simply lovely grounds, gardens and open spaces to rest and play. Whatever your personality, you've got plenty of options here. The land itself began to be developed into a park in the 1880s. Much of the trees and flowers we appreciate today were planted during that period. The beautiful Spanish-style buildings that now house many of the museums were built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition held to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. More were added in the 1930s for another California-themed exhibition. At the same time the Old Globe Theatre opened. This structure is modeled on the historic London structure. Two additional adjacent theaters have opened over the years and this complex now stages everything from Will Shakespeare to Neil Simon to David Mamet.
The various museums housed in the Spanish influenced structures include the excellent Museum of Photographic Arts, the sports-themed Hall of Champions and the Natural History Museum. The museums are open daily and there is an admission charge. Strolling among these beautiful buildings is free. Also, there are several beautiful gardens here that also are available for your leisurely viewing. There are a few restaurants here and there are also many prime picnic spot to dine among the greenery. The San Diego Zoo is situated within the park as well. This is one of the most gorgeous and intelligently laid-out zoos in the world. The collection of animals is amazing. If you have a chance, check it out. It's a fun way to spend the day!
