Balboa Peninsula
In reality this is a part of Newport Beach. However, the atmosphere here is decidedly casual and welcoming unlike certain parts of its mother city. Located at the southern tip of the larger Balboa Peninsula, Balboa Beach begins at its own pier. The Newport pier up north (only a mile or so away) is nearly always busy and packed with people. For a quieter retreat try this area. The sand is just as white and the water as sparkling. There seems to be a greater profusion of small shops and eateries in this part of town. If you plan to kick back with burgers and fries, shop for a bathing suit or souvenir, and the experience the Southern California beach culture, then this is the place.
It's actually a very pretty and quaint part of town. Particularly pretty if you cross over to Balboa Island. This is a man-made island that can be reached via ferry or, on the north side, by the Marine Avenue Bridge. Lots of tight, small, winding streets lead you through an assortment of private homes and small shops. There are several restaurants here. Many are both small enough to give you very attentive service yet not so tiny as to skimp on the quality. Several fine deli's and pizza shops attract most of the foot-traffic. However, there are a few seafood and Italian restaurants that cater to the more committed restaurant-goer. Don't forget to stop at the Balboa Boardwalk. Located near the end of the peninsula, on the bay side looking back toward the city, this is a fun zone full of arcades, thrill rides (including a Ferris Wheel that provides a nice view from atop), ice cream parlors and novelty stands. It is here where tickets are sold so you may hitch a ride over to Catalina Island.

Featured Spot: Navy Pier
|
Considered to be the most tourist packed spot in Chicago, Navy Pier is actually located on Lake Michigan; it extends about a mile into from the shore. The hustle and bustle of this spot is unbelievable! The number of events and activities going on in this place is quite astounding. Opened in 1916, the pier was designed for both shipping and recreational...More
