Brooklyn
Brooklyn is a huge borough that stretches from Coney Island all the way to Brooklyn Heights. Always recognizable by the heavy vocal accent, Brooklynites are some of the most loyal and charming New Yorkers in the state. The cultural differences in the area are apparent, but all locals are very proud of their heritage and area attractions such as the famous Brooklyn Bridge, Coney Island's classic amusement parks, natural seashores and the Beautiful Botanic Gardens. Adding to the aura of self-righteousness, locals have seen their home come a long way from poverty and run-down buildings. Williamsburg and Park Slope are two areas that have been released from income hardships and now boast attractive dining facilities and delightful shopping venues. Performing arts centers, well done museums, waterfront views and gourmet restaurants have all led to the steadily increasing tourists that visit the area.
Visitors can enjoy a myriad of free cultural experiences in Brooklyn. To learn about area history, architecture and design visit the recently restored Greek revival landmark, Brooklyn Borough Hall, which conducts free one-hour tours every Tuesday at 1pm. The grand rotunda is impressive with the many monumental marble columns, the historic portraits of past mayors, and the highly ornate courtroom. Every Saturday from noon to 4pm, all beer connoisseurs must stop by the Brooklyn Brewery for a free tour of the 50,000 square foot complex and sample the ale. The stainless steel brew house was opened in May 1996 in a former steel foundry built in the 1860's in Williamsburg. Hop on board the Brooklyn Trolley for a wonderful and free way to view the area. The replicated old time trolley is available for transit every weekend from noon to 5pm with the complete tour taking around one hour. Feel free to embark and disembark the trolley to view area attractions such as the Prospect Park Wildlife Center, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and the Grand Army Plaza. The Brooklyn Cyclones bring baseball home to new KeySpan Park in Coney Island for the first time in 44 years. Sports lovers can enjoy a baseball game for a mere $6.00, while shoppers can meander in the new retail space and daredevils can ride roller coasters at the nearby Deno amusement park. Following every baseball game, Deno will light up the sky over Coney Island with a spectacular fireworks display. One of the most notable area sites is the beautiful and historic Brooklyn Bridge. Architect John Roebling began construction in 1867 with completion ending in 1883. The structure set a number of engineering precedents in bridge-building technology with its double-arched towers set firmly into the East River's bedrock and the unprecedented use of steel cables allowing for a span of great distance. Still a wonder of architectural design, the immense suspension bridge is best appreciated by taking a leisurely walk across. Brooklyn has many wonderful things to offer such as historic venues, spectacular views, good food and decent shopping, but the one thing that stands out most is the overwhelming loyalty and pride the residents exude about their hometown.
