Capitol Hill District

Considered to be one of the strangest places in town, Seattle's Capitol Hill District is home to the hip and trendy new generation. Numerous retro clothing stores dot the surrounding area and the newest fashion trends can be seen walking around the street everyday. Definitely a festival for the eyes! The streets are lined with comfortable cafes, hangout joints for the young and old alike and antique shops for your perusal. Fine arts and bookstores are no strangers in this area. The buildings look cool and the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. A little bit of trivia; this is also the district that was featured in Hollywood's "Singles". Conveniently located next to downtown Seattle, this area is a mixture of residential streets, stores and an amazing array of nightlife. The residential areas are well known for its distinctive classic looking apartments and turn of the century bungalows. The most well known fact about the Capital Hill District is that other than being home to a diverse community of young adults and professionals, it has a strong and thriving gay community, evident in its gay bars and clubs. Despite the appearance of youthful indulgence, the area has a surprisingly healthy mix of elderly and young people. Located nearby is the Seattle Central Community College and during school season, the area is full of students getting from one class to another. The nationally acclaimed Cornish College of the Arts is also located nearby as well as Seattle University. Interestingly, it is also the hub for religious activities. You will find the St. Mark's Cathedral, St. Joseph's Church and a smaller Pilgrim Congregation Church. Although Capitol Hill has a strong Catholic history, you will find that a lot of visitors go there for shopping and entertainment.
An area called the Broadway is main hubbub of activities, and is comparable to New York's Upper West Side. It is the place where people, both residents and non residents come to hang out, have a drink, watch a movie, and basically eat and be merry. There are numerous restaurants available with western to eastern fares such as Mexican, Japanese and Indian cuisines. For the movie goers, you will be able to experience watching a movie in a vintage movie house. The Egyptian and Harvard Exit specialize in independent and foreign films not easily found in local cinemas. The shopping experience here is a mix between modern chain stores and the remaining independent local stores. If you're more into sightseeing and not into shopping, movies or clubbing, you will want to walk around and take a look at the architecture of the houses and streets, as well as two other tourist attractions; Lake View Cemetery and Volunteer Park. Lake View Cemetery is the final resting place of Seattle's earliest pioneers; these are the names that you find on the buildings, streets and parks today. Nestled amongst the tombstone, you will find the resting place of the martial arts legend, Bruce Lee and his son Brandon Lee. Walking around the cemetery you will see some very unique and gorgeous headstones with Chinese inscriptions and there are numerous resting places that feature beautiful sculptures and engravings. Leaving the Cemetery, you can walk towards Volunteer Park, which was once home of the Seattle Art Museum. The building is currently occupied by the Seattle Asian Art Museum. The park is calm and features a conservatory and wonderful view of Seattle. If you're up to it, climb up about 108 steps to the top of the old water tower and you will see a breathtaking view of the city. All in all, the Capitol Hill District offers tourists a view of the more social and residential aspect of Seattle's lifestyle and it caters to both the young and old, so be sure you take time to spend a day at the most urban district in Seattle.
