East Village
Lined with an increasingly smart collection of boutiques, the East Village is proving that it's not just for kids anymore. Although still exuding a youthful vibe with a wonderful mix of trendy and ethnic restaurants, punk-rock clubs, folk cafes and hip off Broadway theater productions, there is a little something for everyone here. The area extends between 14th Street and Houston Street, from Broadway east to First Avenue and beyond to Alphabet City, avenues A, B, C, and D. Up-and-coming designers can be found marketing their clothing on East 9th Street. It's also an excellent strip for stylish gifts and little luxuries. There are many new restaurants and boutiques dotting A, B and C Avenues, but be sure not to miss the famous watering holes, dives, and other original bars that still remain. The Polish butcher stores, the Italian pastry shops on 1st Avenue, the Ukranian stores on 2nd Avenue and the Japanese restaurants on East 9th Street all sell goods that are indigenous to the area and speak volumes about the ethnic history and diversity. The East Village is still relatively small, but worth a trip to savor a glimpse of the melting pot of America.
The area embraces great ethnic diversity and tolerance to rapid growth. Alphabet City remained a haven of drug dealers and other unsavory types until 1998, but no more. This eastern most area of the Village has blossomed due to a sudden real estate boom. French bistros and gourmet coffee cafes are popping up on every corner to meet the demands in the area. There are strong elements of original Ukranian and Irish heritages along with a large Russian neighborhood established in the 1800's. Recent immigrants have created the area of "Little India", on Sixth Street between First and Second Avenues. Yuppies, techies and artists have moved in amongst the different cultural areas to find reprieve from the high rents in other areas of New York City. The area is far off the subway lines and the streets can get deserted late at night, for the growth that has swept the city has made a huge impact on the East Village, but this area is still largely undiscovered by anyone except the locals. The southwestern section of the East Village is NoHo, short for North of Houston Street and is a wonderful place to browse, day or night. Very similar to its southern neighbor SoHo; trendy lounges, stylish restaurants, chic boutiques and upscale antique shops are abundant. Small urban gardens and art exhibits grace the streets and lend a rather European feel to the area. The East Village is still relatively undiscovered compared to other areas of New York City, but with the almost daily additions of new bistros, clubs and shopping venues, the slow growth and peaceful old-world lifestyle might last a couple more years.

Considered to be the most tourist packed spot in Chicago, Navy Pier is actually located on Lake Michigan; it extends about a mile into from the shore. The hustle and bustle of this spot is unbelievable! The number of events and activities going on in this place is quite astounding. Opened in 1916, the pier was designed for both shipping and recreational...More
