Getty Center
Built for the fair sum of 1 billion dollars and making a smash debut opening in December of 1997, this museum-palace is the result of the largest cash endowment in all the arts. By law, the Getty Foundation must spend hundreds of millions of dollars each year. At his death in the 1970s, oil magnate J. Paul Getty left $700 million to support the museum. That sum has since grown to a reported $4 billion. As the fund grew, so did the collection. The original, and relatively modest, Malibu museum was essentially moved to its new location and the former was then closed for restoration (due to reopen in 2001). At the new Center, no expenses were spared. The structure itself, located atop the hill in the Sepulveda Pass off the I-405 freeway, took years to build and was designed by famed modernist architect Richard Meier. It is a gleaming white behemoth that houses the collection begun by the late oilman.
If you are planning to arrive by car, be sure to have made reservations - perhaps months in advance. Parking is $5.00 but it's the only way to assure entrance. If you arrive by bus or taxi you will be handled on a first-come first-served basis. An electric motorized tram carries you from the parking area up the hill to the real entrance of the museum. Ahead are three floors devoted to art ranging from Ancient Greece to the era of photography. There is also a lovely garden with a stunning view of West Los Angeles and the ocean. A restaurant (reservations required) and a cafeteria are also available. Occasionally there are concerts and lectures in the evenings - with a terrific view as backdrop.
