Golden Gate Park
This is a large park in a (relatively) small town. Where the city is heavily dense, the park feels amazingly spacious. It's two-miles long and about half-a-mile wide. It takes up a fair among of the space on the city's western side. At over 1,000 acres there's plenty to see, do and explore. If you'd like there are several museums in the park's interior. The California Academy of Sciences and the Asian Art Museum are popular visits. There's also the lovely and serene Japanese Tea Garden. But with San Francisco's great weather and the design of the park, you may want a more active approach as well. Rent a bike, rollerblades or a rowboat. There are several shops on the park's perimeter that will rent by the hour or for a whole day. At Stowe Lake there is a place for renting boats for circling Strawberry hill at your own pace. The Hill itself makes for some fun exploring. Complete with a waterfall and a Chinese Pavilion (courtesy of the Chinese government) the island is popular with many visitors - at least those who know about it.
A nice treat for the active on Sundays: the city closes down the major thoroughfare John F. Kennedy Drive and make it available to joggers, cyclists and park-strollers. There are also giant open spaces mapped out for soccer, baseball, tennis, lawn bowling and horseback riding. At the western end of the park are a couple of full-sized windmills that are interesting to look at and explore. There is also a restaurant and brewery that affords a terrific view of the Pacific.
