Haight Street
The Haight, as the general area east of Golden Gate Park is known, is focused around the famous Haight-Ashbury intersection. This spot was made immortally famous in the 1960s as the gathering place for hippies and flower children. Denouncing war and corporate immoralities, the free-spirited youth defined themselves and their times and set the tone for this formerly middle-class neighborhood. Most of the counter-culture feeling remains along Haight street but who else finds it amusing that the Haight-Ashbury corner now includes a Ben and Jerry's on one side and a Gap store on another.
Don't be alarmed. The whole street hasn't suddenly sold out. For the most part, the shops here are as eclectic as you will find anywhere. There are anarchist bookstores, used record stores, head shops, tattoo parlors and ethnic eateries. There's even a tiny movie theater, the Red Vic Movie House, that plays unusual films nightly - several changes each week. The Grateful Dead moved in to one of the many Victorian homes during the height of the social movement. Jefferson Airplane also took over one of these ubiquitous structures. Today, many of the homes are in good to excellent condition. Several could use some work. Just walking the neighborhood gawking at these building can while away a few hours. Back down on Haight you might spend some time looking for some appropriate funky duds so you might fit in with the city's newest "Deadheads". To get the feel of these kids, you might want to try a legal drug and pop in to one of the Haight's bars, such as the Gold Cane, and down a few Jagermeisters. Walk back out into the world. Life is good.
