Hillcrest
University Avenue is the main drag through this part of town, a little further north from the downtown area. The center for gay activity in San Diego, this spot welcomes all people to enjoy a day or evening of comfortable dining, barhopping, people watching and shopping. There's also a great movie theater here too, one of the most eclectic multiplexes in all of San Diego. There are a large number of interesting bookstores here, too. If you're looking for something off the mainstream, this may be the place to play treasure hunter. Several shops sell specialized books on politics, social history, and the arts - both new and second-hand. The Hillcrest Newsstand on University near 5th Avenue has a great selection of newspapers and magazines and is conveniently located near several cafes and coffeehouses.
Perhaps the most notable side street is 5th Avenue. This is full of some of the better restaurants in San Diego and some great wine shops as well. On the weekend, a typically sunny San Diego afternoon brings out people from all over San Diego for a pleasant stroll along the tree-shaded avenue. Many will take in a movie at the Hillcrest Cinemas. This theater features art-house independent and foreign films throughout the year.
