Newport Beach
Contrasting Newport Beach with fellow Orange Country neighbor Huntington Beach is like comparing the perceived East Coast refinement with West Coast sunny casualness. For the uninitiated it may seem as though the biggest activity in Newport were lounging about one's yacht while comparing tans. Kidding aside, this is a very wealthy town with some of the priciest real estate in the country. Surprisingly, especially around the water, these homes are fairly modest in appearance. However, this might not be your typical way to spend an afternoon and so there are still a few other activities that may float your boat.
For the sand-set the Newport pier is a great place to lay your beach towel. Located between 20th and 21st streets there is plenty of prime people-watching available, especially during the height of summer. The California Girl myth is proven to be fact in this particular spot. And the beach is clean and the waves are terrific. What more could you ask? For the more culturally inclined, take a short drive inland to the Orange County Museum of Art. Formerly know as the Newport Harbor Art Museum, this is a cozy space that features modern works from native Californians and other artists. From here you are blocks away from the grand Fashion Island. A very California feel is created at this outdoors shopping mall. It's all red-tiled roofs and palm trees and arched entranceways greeting you to a sunshine-filled day of shopping. Neiman-Marcus and Bloomingdale's are two of the largest department stores here. Restaurants on the top floors share stunning views of the Pacific. There is a Hard Rock Café on the premises as well. As the day winds down, why not catch a flick at the Big Newport Edward's Theater across the street. This is the corporate office of the Southern California chain and its flagship theater houses the largest movie screen in Orange County.

Considered to be the most tourist packed spot in Chicago, Navy Pier is actually located on Lake Michigan; it extends about a mile into from the shore. The hustle and bustle of this spot is unbelievable! The number of events and activities going on in this place is quite astounding. Opened in 1916, the pier was designed for both shipping and recreational...More
