North Beach, SF
North Beach is the traditionally Italian section of San Francisco. If you like Italian food you're going to love it here. Just walking around the right spots will tickle your nose with scents of tomato sauces, fresh breads and herbs. It also happens to be a rather elegant part of town. Certain areas remind a visitor of the old streets of Boston. The area is neatly bordered on the south by Broadway and on the west by Columbus Avenue. Head up Grant Avenue for a row of great Italian restaurants and delis.
North Beach was also the spot of the Beat Movement in the 1950s. The famous City Lights bookstore that played literary home to Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti is still an important part of the community. Film director Francis Ford Coppola owns an unusual building here in town. Part of it is used to house his Zoetrope Studios. Several other writer and artist live here making it one of the most populated and interesting parts of town.
