Seaquarium

What is a visit to Miami without stopping at one of South Florida's most popular marine life attractions? The 38-acre park was opened in 1955, and has been well known for its marine exhibit of more than 10,000 creatures! Their star studded cast also includes Lolita the Killer Whale, Flipper the Dolphin and Salty the Sea Lion. Admission prices are $23.95 for adults and $18.95 for children ages 3 to 9. The coolest thing about the park is that, for an additional $5, you can purchase an annual pass with photo ID that gives you unlimited access to the park through out the year. The park is open 7 days a week from 9.30am to 6pm. The Seaquarium is easily accessible from the Rickenbacker Causeway. The marine parks' greatest attraction is Lolita the Killer Whale and her Pacific white sided dolphin companions. Lolita and her friends can be found at the Whale and Dolphin Stadium. Here you can watch her play with the dolphins and her trainers, as well as showing off her many entertaining behaviors, complete with background music and state-of-the-art stage design. The next biggest attraction at the park is the Flipper Lagoon, where the Flipper (Atlantic Bottlenose) dolphins live and where the Flipper Dolphin Show takes place. Also close by is the Golden Dome. This architecture is a Miami Landmark and it houses the playful and fun sea lions. They even let you have hands on experience during feeding hour by letting you hand them their fishy meals! The sea lions will make you laugh and squeal in delight as they playfully nudge your hand as a signal of "Feed me!" Once you have visited the shows, don't forget to visit the exhibits and aquariums also located at the park. The two types of aquariums in the park are the Tropical Reef Aquarium and the Tropical Aquariums. The Tropical Reef Aquarium is a 750,000 gallon saltwater aquarium inhabited by reef fishes of every size, color and description. One of the demonstrations they provide is during feeding times, when a diver will slowly approach the marine life and hand feed the tropical fish.
There are 26 individual aquariums that make up the Tropical Aquariums set. It is located on the lower level of the Top Deck in the Dolphin Stadium. Each aquarium is inhabited by different types of fishes, anemones, corals and other marine-life. Other than the aquariums, there are 3 other major exhibits in the park. The Shark exhibit, as you can tell by its name, is an awesome exhibit on numerous types of sharks. It is located in a 'channel' and there are bridges running across it where you can stand and view these magnificent hunters. It is an open air exhibit and you can even take a "Shark Presentation", during which the resident shark specialist will point out the different types of sharks and the many more that inhabit the waters. The Manatee exhibit at the Seaquarium is part of the rescue and rehabilitation program that they have. The Manatee Presentation will teach you so much about this highly endangered species and also show you ways that you can help save these beautiful and gentle beings. You can access the exhibit via poolside (open air) and underwater viewing areas. If you’ve never been to the Florida Everglades or seen an alligator, then be sure to visit the Alligator Exhibit. They have all the species you will find out in the wild, if you decide to go alligator spotting at the Everglades. Then, after you have taken a look at the alligators, make sure you visit their older brother, the crocodiles. The latest attractions at the Seaquarium are the Nile Crocodiles. They come from fresh and saltwater habitats such as the Nile. Think you've seen it all now? Not quite yet! There are even more things to see here, like the Discovery Bay and the Tropical Rain Forest. And then there is always a picnic after the shows, in the shade of the trees while listening to Lolita splashing around in her enormous tank. A day at the Seaquarium is guaranteed to be fun and exiting.
