Seattle Center

One of Seattle's greatest attraction, located right in downtown in the heart of the city, is the Seattle Center. Built in 1962, the enormous complex hosts not only the famous Space Needle; it also hosts a cultural and entertainment park that spans over 20 acres. With over 10 million visitors a year, the center is Seattle's biggest tourist attraction and also a central location for festivals and expos. Within it's boundaries you will find an amazing number of tourists attractions such as the Experience Music Project, the Pacific Science Center, the Seattle Children's Museum, the Seattle Children's Theater and Key Arena home of the Seattle Supersonics. If that's not enough it also has the Seattle Center Opera House, a children's amusement park, a fountain called the "International Fountain", the Intiman Theatre, the Bagley Wright Theatre, The Northwest Craft Center, Mercer Arena and the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. Not to mention the unique designs and architecture to be found there, as well as the gardens, plazas, fountains and sculptures. There is absolutely no way you could spend a day at the center without having something to do or someone to watch! The first thing to do when arrive at the center is visit the Space Needle of course. It is Seattle's most famous landmark and was built for the 1962 World's Fair. The top part of the tower is a rotating restaurant, an observation deck and a gift shop. It is an excellent place to look down onto the entire city and to enjoy the best view in Seattle. The Space Needle is open daily from 8am to 12 midnight. Tickets to ride the elevator to the Observation Deck are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and youth aged 11-17, and $5 for children aged 4-10. One of the greatest things about the Seattle Center is that it has attractions that cater specifically to children for visitors traveling with their family.
The cutest place to visit is the Children's Museum. They have interactive child-sized exhibits that are fun and 'totally cool'. There are also hands-on activities that children can participate in to learn about art, humanities and space. If you do not feel like waiting in line to have a meal at the rotating restaurant in the Space Needle, after visiting the Children's Museum just walk on over to the International Fountain and have a little picnic and play in the water! Completely renovated in 1995, the fountain sprays water from 287 air-injected fountainheads. A beautiful view of the fountain can be seen each winter when it is lit up in dramatic colors as part of Seattle's "Night of Lights". If you want a more mature fare, be sure to visit the Pacific Science Center, a popular museum with interactive exhibits such as the Butterfly House. It also features an IMAX theater, a planetarium and an outdoor Water Works exhibit. Close by is the Northwest Craft Center, a non profit contemporary craft gallery. It has exhibits from over 200 professional potters, jewelers, printmakers and other crafters. Another great attraction in the center that is open during summer is the Fun Forest Amusement Park; it has everything from roller coasters to mini golf. Another famous attraction is the Experience Music Project (EMP). It is a unique music museum that combines hands-on experience and interactive exhibits demonstrating the creation of popular American music. It is a dynamic ride-like experience that will encourage its visitors to enjoy the magic and joy of music in all its forms. The EMP is the first museum of its kind to be built utilizing state-of-the-art technology and a world class collection of artifacts. A visit to the Seattle Center is incomplete without visiting one final destination, or rather the many versions of it that are present in the center, it's beautiful and sprawling parks and gardens. They have a calming effect amidst all the bustle of activity and events happening within the center. The Seattle Center is definitely the one-stop-shop experience for any tourist looking to spend an exciting day in Seattle.
