Sunset Strip
The entire country has been fascinated with this two-mile strip for most of a century. Hollywood Glamour of the 1930s and 40s brought us images of movie starlets with their well dressed men exiting limousines ready to live it up at another bash at some famous nightclub like Ciro's, the Trocadero or the Mocombo. Later TV gave us "77 Sunset Strip", further engraining flashy images and style onto the American public. Today, while that old-style glamour may be gone, there is still plenty of excitement and a new vibrant style all it's own. Nightclubs and hotels dominate the scene. The strip starts on the east with the Chateau Marmont Hotel. Infamous for Jim Morrison's antics and John Belushi's death by overdose, the Marmont today is a popular place for up and coming, hip talent to hang out, have a drink, give a magazine interview, or even shoot a photo spread in the hotel's beautiful but compact garden. A tight arrangement of trees partially obscures views of the hotel, but its castle-like forms finally breaks free above the trees reminding casual passers-by of its existence.
A few blocks down is the House of Blues. Becoming increasingly popular over the last decade, House of Blues has become a showcase for all types of sounds. Rap, heavy metal, Cuban pop, rock as well as traditional blues can be heard throughout the year. Detractors might say it's become a bit of a tourist spot - be that as it may, great bands continue to play weekly. Another popular music spot - one with a longer lineage of history is the Whisky-a-Go-Go. This is still a great place to see bands that have a strong following yet have not become so huge as to avoid playing the strip at all. Also for music, don't forget the Viper Room and the Roxy. If you can't make it in to one of these clubs perhaps you can try to make it past the doorman for the Sky Bar at the Mondrian Hotel (yeah, right).

Featured Spot: Navy Pier

Considered to be the most tourist packed spot in Chicago, Navy Pier is actually located on Lake Michigan; it extends about a mile into from the shore. The hustle and bustle of this spot is unbelievable! The number of events and activities going on in this place is quite astounding. Opened in 1916, the pier was designed for both shipping and recreational...More
