Universal Citywalk
In the late 1980s Universal Studios added a twenty-screen movie theater next to its amphitheater; thus helping make Universal City a destination not just for tourists. But it wasn't until City Walk opened that the public had a firm place to stroll and call their own. Crazy angles, giant gorillas and plenty of neon make lively the open-air mall. A water fountain that shoots pellets of water straight out of the cement floor attracts kids throughout the summer. The Jon Jerde designed (also Las Vegas' Fremont Street Experience) mini-city is a laid-back zone perfect to get a bite before or after a concert or show.
The "entrance" is to the west near the Universal globe greeting visitors to the famous Studio Tours and well as the City Walk. As you enter, there are typically street performers drawing a crowd. Live music is common on busy weekends. Several of LA's more recognizable restaurant chains are here and a few nightclubs keep people hopping until the early morning. One of UCLA's several "Extension" wings is oddly located right in the middle of this. Perhaps you can stay and take a class on film directing. There is an excellent bookstore here as well. Though entrance is free there is a $5 parking fee. If you choose to see a movie part of that money will be refunded at the box office.
