Las Vegas Strip - North
The North side of the Las Vegas Strip contains a tightly clustered group of hotels. Circus Circus, the Stardust, the Frontier, Treasure Island, the Mirage, Caesars Palace, the Barbary Coast, the Flamingo, the Imperial Palace, Harrah's, the Venetian, the Riviera, the Sahara and the Stratosphere Tower call this section of Vegas home. The tallest of these structures is the Stratosphere Tower which reaches an impressive 1150 feet. Atop the Stratosphere are the High Roller (the world's highest roller coaster) and another ride called the Big Shot. The Big Shot propels its passengers 160 feet straight upwards in 2.5 seconds. Of the two rides, this one is definitely the favorite for thrill seekers. Down the road, Circus Circus offers its own adrenalin enhancers with Chaos, Rim Runner, the Inverter, and Canyon Blaster, the world's only indoor, double-loop, double-corkscrew roller coaster. Next door, the Stardust provides a luxurious setting for the serious gambler. There are no theaters or amusement rides here, just one massive casino. Moving southward, a visitor encounters the Frontier, a popular casino with an excellent buffet at The Orchard. A little further down the strip is Treasure Island. One of the main attractions here is a full-blown pirate battle that is staged every 90 minutes from 4:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. The show is free, but the pyrotechnics and live stunt work are worthy of admission charges. Nearby, the Mirage offers the famous duo of Siegfried and Roy and their white tigers.
On the corner of Flamingo Road is Caesars Palace. Once inside, gaze up at the ceiling, which has been painted to resemble a beautiful blue sky. Built in 1966, Caesars Palace's staying power owes much to its Renaissance opulence. Across the street, the Barbary Coast offers one of the best restaurants on the strip, Drai's. The cuisine is French Continental, and the elegant décor and live music create a wonderful ambience. Heading Northward, one quickly runs across the Flamingo. The Flamingo is a Vegas staple. The original Flamingo was one of the first hotel casinos in Vegas and was founded by notorious mobster Bugsy Siegel. Right beside the Flamingo is the Imperial Palace, which is home to a massive automobile museum. One of the most famous vehicles in this collection is the convertible in which JFK was assassinated. Harrah's is the next stop to the North. The most spectacular part of this casino is the ceiling, which is kept constantly ablaze with a series of fiber-optic fireworks. The Venetian comes next. Like the Bellagio on the southern side of the Strip, the Venetian focuses on culture and art. One of its peculiarities is a large indoor moat complete with Gondolas. Next in line is the Riviera, the most entertainment-oriented casino in Vegas. The Riviera boasts four different stage shows and was the setting for Martin Scorcese's "Casino." Approaching the end of the strip is the Sahara. The Sahara is one of the best values for blackjack players. During the day minimum bets are only one dollar and call drinks are always complimentary. With so much to offer, the North side of the strip still has plenty of resources to compete with the awesome "four corners" and the rest of its neighbors to the south.
