Las Vegas Strip - South
The South Side of the Las Vegas Strip is home to an impressive array of hotels and casinos, each of which offer something unique to their guests. Some of the principle players along this piece of road include the Bellagio, the Boardwalk, the Monte Carlo, New York New York, Excalibur, the Luxor, Mandalay Bay, the Four Seasons, the Tropicana, the MGM Grand, the Aladdin, the Paris Resort and Bally's. Among these world-class contenders, the Bellagio stands out as one of the most luxurious. The Bellagio sits on a ten-acre lake that contains a $40 million fountain system. Employing 4,500 lights and 1,200 nozzles, the fountains provide an unforgettable 5-10 minute exhibition of color and carefully choreographed geyser sprays every hour on the hour. For those who prefer something a little more robust, New York New York's roller coaster, the Manhattan Express, races in front of the realistic façade of the New York skyline at speeds of more than 60 miles per hour.
Forty million dollars must be the going rate in Vegas for phenomenal water attractions because Mandalay Bay's Shark Reef has the same price tag. With more than 100 different species of animals including three golden crocodiles, of which there are only a dozen in the entire world, the Shark Reef is a great way to beat the heat of the Nevada desert. Speaking of beat the heat, there is a beach with simulated wave action and a man-made river for the hotel guests to enjoy too. Next to Mandalay Bay rises a 30-story, black, glass pyramid that is crowned with an enormous, green laser beam. The structure, known as the Luxor, comes fully equipped with its own Sphinx. The Luxor is another Southern Strip must see. The hotel houses the world's largest atrium and is well known for its spa. Next door to the Luxor, Excalibur marks the Southwest portion of the famous "four corners" at the intersection of Tropicana Avenue. The theme here is, of course, medieval, and the nightly jousting tournaments draw impressive crowds. With more than 4,000 rooms, Excalibur rivals the massive MGM Grand in terms of enormity. Directly across the street stands the Tropicana, a hotel once frequented by James Bond in "Diamonds Are Forever." Clinging to its roots, the Tropicana has not embraced the family fun theme common to many of the new resorts along the strip. Instead, the Tropicana has taken the exact opposite tactic, distinctly maintaining a more mature atmosphere. Aside from the myriad callipygian showgirls and a very plush casino, the Tropicana also offers a swim-up blackjack table in its pool. Across the street from the Tropicana rests the massive 5,000 room MGM Grand. This goliath replaced the old MGM Grand which is now Bally's, another hotel that remains firmly dedicated to pampering its gamblers in an adult setting. The new MGM Grand has nine restaurants and a food court, but the biggest attraction aside from the special events that it hosts is the dancing to be found at the Studio 54 nightclub. The club is an amazing replica of the fashionable 70s dance Mecca. Like its namesake, this spot is the hottest nightclub in town. Given all these options, any traveler could easily spend a fantastic week in Vegas without ever leaving this two-block stretch of highway.
