Venice Boardwalk
Land developer Abbot Kinney had a dream of turning this area south of Santa Monica into a Southern Californian edition of the grand canals of Venice, Italy. At the beginning of the 20th century he just about made it happen. However, as the fickle masses lost interest in this "European" playground, the canals literally lost their luster and ran into disrepair. Today the area draws people from all over Los Angeles to see or be seen. This is truly people-watchers paradise. The Venice Boardwalk snakes its way along the sandy beach and finds itself full on weekends of chainsaw-jugglers, one-man bands, breakdancers and the tanned and toned muscle-set.
Muscle Beach, a little further south of Venice's main boardwalk area, is where serious iron gets pumped. From as early as the 1920s men -- and women -- have built their bodies and made a show of it for the gawking public. Perhaps it was in the 50s and part of the 60s that this portion of the beach saw its prime. Still, today there is plenty of action on the popular part of the sands.
